Beowulf Linux inside

The Case.

What we want.

Almost any Supercomputer that we know is BIG and consumes lots of electric power, we're going to minimize that.
The first version will hold 6 computers inside the case, that means, 6 mainboards with processors, RAM, CPU fans, VGA card, network card and hard disk. To do this we disassembled two rack boxes that we luckily found in trash, and build a big case with the size that we need, this part was easy because it's like a mecano toy.

Box Structure
This are Aluminum (AI) pieces to build the box.
Atomic number: 13 Atomic weight 26.9815

Inside the Case.

6 mainboards are going to be inside this box, we tested everyone alone before to avoid later problems. Having a hard disk with id software Doom2 game installed is an aid to check this, power on every computer with a game like this and leave it alone 10 minutes to check posible crashes. You can also download Docmem , a bootdisk to test RAM SIMMS and DIMS.

Mainboards

Once the box completed we put the mainboards inside carefully by a little plastic rails, leaving the keyboard connectors up as the VGA and network connector (we disasembled before the L iron on the NIC and VGA, to have enougth space for the 6 mainboards).

Rails
The mainboards slides up and down by this platic supports.
Empty box
The box is now completed and 2 power supplies installed on.

Next step the power suppy, 6 power supplies will be stupid, we'd use only 2 power supplies that means we have to cut and join 3 pairs of P8 and P9 conectors on each power supply.

Power supply detail
Cut every cable on the power suppy.
Power supply join
We'll connect 3 mainboards on each power supply

The hard disks were attached with 2 screws each one on the sides,  firmly attached.
The IDE cables were "rounded" by the easy technic that consists on making a little cut every 5 wires and tie them using a plastic.

Cutting IDE cable
A little cut every 5 lines and rip the rest by hand
Rounded cable and not rounded one
It's easier to work with rounded cables
